Certain conditions can increase the risk of hyperglycemia in a diabetic. If the hyperglycemia is persistent then the patient is at risk for developing diabetic ketoacidosis.
Risk factors associated with hyperglycemia in a diabetic:
(1) failing to take insulin
(2) taking less than the required amount of insulin
(3) eating more than allowed based on dietary plan and insulin dosing
(4) developing a fever, infection or other stressful (acute phase) condition
(5) starting a drug associated with hyperglycemia (corticosteroids)
