Riddle et al defined severe hypoglycemia based on clinical and laboratory findings. The authors are investigators in the Insulin Glargine 4002 study.
Criteria for severe hypoglycemia - all of the following:
(1) presence of symptoms of hypoglycemia (see above)
(2) need for assistance from another person
(3) one or both of the following:
(3a) a plasma-referenced glucose < 56 mg/dL (3.1 mmol/L)
(3b) prompt reversal of symptoms following administration of glucagon, intravenous glucose or oral carbohydrate
