Description

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) developed criteria for the diagnosis of perinatal exposure in a child. This is designated by the prefix "E".


 

Parameters:

(1) child's HIV antibody test

(2) maternal HIV status

 

Criteria for perinatal exposure:

(1) mother known to be HIV infected during the pregnancy AND HIV antibody status unknown

(2) child < 18 months old when tested for HIV antibody AND HIV antibody test confirmed positive (EIA positive with Western blot or immunofluorescence assay positive)

 

Possible outcomes on continued followup:

(1) HIV infected (meets criteria for HIV infected, see previous section)

(2) HIV uninfected with seroreversion

 

Need to exclude:

(1) false positive test for antibody to HIV in mother

(2) false negative test for antibody to HIV in child
