BILAG Categories for Musculoskeletal Manifestations of SLE

Purpose: To categorize musculoskeletal involvement in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) being evaluated with the BILAG index.

Description

British Isles Lupus Assessment Group (BILAG) developed an index for evaluating disease activity in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The index is based on several findings, each of which is categorized. The authors are from multiple universities in Great Britain.


 

Severe musculoskeletal manifestions include:

(1) myositis

(2) severe polyarthritis with loss of function and unresponsive to therapy

 

Moderate musculoskeletal manifestions include:

(1) arthritis with definite synovitis

(2) tendonitis

 

Mild musculoskeletal manifestions include:

(1) arthralgias

(2) myalgias

(3) tendon contractures with fixed deformity

(4) aseptic bone necrosis

(5) mild chronic myositis
