Description

Mikdashi et al identified a number of risk factors associated with epilepsy in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from closer monitoring. The authors are from the University of Maryland in Baltimore.

Parameters:

(1) gender

(2) number of neuropsychiatric (NP) manifestations of SLE

(3) disease activity at baseline as determined using SLEDAI

(4) history of stroke

(5) anticardiolipin IgG antibody at baseline

The presence of 3 or more neuropsychiatric manifestations of SLE indicated a patient at high risk for epilepsy, with an odds ratio of 46.
