Description

Rodriguez-Pandero and Lopez-Meijas reported the Extent of Pleural Carcinomatosis (EPC) score for patients with pleural metastases. This can be used to describe the degree of pleural involvement and to monitor this over time. The authors are from Virgen del Rocio Hospital in Seville, Spain.

Patient selection: metastatic carcinoma involving the pleura

Procedure: thoracoscopy

Locations evaluated:

(1) visceral pleura

(2) parietal pleura

(3) diaphragmatic pleura

Tumor Extent

Points

none

0

few isolated lesions

1

extensive disease

2

massive and diffuse disease covering all or almost all of the pleural surface

3

EPC score =

= (points for visceral pleura) + (points for parietal pleura) + (points for diaphgramatic pleura)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 9

• The higher the score the more extensive the disease.

• A score of 3 on one surface is usually associated with a similar score on the other two.
