Skopouli et al developed criteria for diagnosing Sjogren's Syndrome. The authors are from the University of Ioannina in Greece.
Parameters:
(1) history of autoimmune rheumatic disease
(2) recurrent parotid gland swelling/enlargement
(3) subjective xerostomia (based on answering questions of Moutsopoulos et al)
(4) subjective xerophthalmia (based on answering questions of Moutsopoulos et al)
(5) Rose-Bengal staining
(6) minor salivary gland biopsy
Criteria for primary Sjogren's Syndrome - all of the following:
(1) no history of autoimmune rheumatic disease
(2) one or more of the following:
(2a) recurrent parotid gland enlargement
(2b) subjective xerostomia
(2c) positive Rose-Begal staining
(3) minor salivary gland biopsy grading >= 2+
Criteria for secondary Sjogren's Syndrome - all of the following:
(1) definite rheumatoid arthritis or other autoimmune rheumatic disease
(2) subjective xerophthalmia
(3) minor salivary gland biopsy grading >= 2+
Performance:
• For primary Sjogren's syndrome sensitivity ranged from 89-95% and specificity 82-94%, with the total misclassification error rate 7-13%.
• For secondary Sjogren's syndrome sensitivity was 100% and specificity 97%, with the total misclassification error rate 2%.
Purpose: To evaluate a patient for the diagnosis of Sjogren's syndrome using the criteria of Skopouli et al (Greek criteria).
Specialty: Immunology/Rheumatology
