Vitali et al used a classification tree to evaluate patient's for primary Sjogren's syndrome. The decision points are based on the parameters from the European criteria. The authors are numerous rheumatologists from multiple European countries.
Criteria:
(1) ocular symptoms of dry eyes
(2) oral symptoms of xerostomia
(3) ocular signs (Schirmer or Rose Bengal test)
(4) histopathologic features (focus score)
(5) salivary gland involvement (enlarged salivary glands and/or decreased saliva flow)
(6) presence anti-Ro and/or anti-La
Exclusions:
(1) pre-existing malignant lymphoma
(2) acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)
(3) sarcoidosis
(4) graft-vs-host disease (GVHD)
