Description

Bernabeu-Wittel et al reported the Profund Index (PI) to describe polypathological patients. This score can be used to predict a patient's prognosis and can identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from multiple hospitals in Spain.

Parameters:

(1) age

(2) cancer

(3) dementia

(4) NYHA or MRC functional class

(5) delirium during the last hospital admission

(6) hemoglobin (as measure of anemia)

(7) Barthel Index

(8) caregiver

(9) number of hospital admissions in past 12 months

where:

• Other scores use different cut-offs for anemia based on gender.

• Delirium can have many causes. Delirium due to a medication may have a different significance when compared to a metabolic disorder.

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 30

• The higher the score the greater the level of comorbidity.
