Description

Celli et al proposed the BODE (Body Mass Index, Obstructive Airflow, Dyspnea, Exercise Capacity) Index for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. This has been modified in the updated BODE Index.

The change is in the point assignment for the 6-minute walk test, which is weighted more than the other 3 factors. This changes the maximum score from 10 to 15.

Parameters:

(1) body mass index [BMI = (kilograms body weight) / ((height in meters)^2)]

(2) FEV1 as percent of predicted

(3) dyspnea, measured using the MRC dyspnea scale

(4) exercise capacity as measured by a 6-minute walk

Interpretation:

• minimum index: 0

• maximum index: 15

• The higher the index the worse the prognosis. Data for patients with severe COPD and for patients who have had a first hospital admission for COPD is given in Table 4 of Puhan et al.
