Description

The M.D. Anderson Cancer Center's Tumor Score can be used to evaluate the risk for a patient with an aggressive malignant non-Hodgkin's lymphoma at the time of presentation. This can help identify patients who may benefit from more aggressive therapy.

Parameters:

(1) Ann Arbor stage

(2) B-type symptoms

(3) tumor burden

(4) serum LDH

(5) serum beta-2-microglobulin

B-type symptoms: one or more of the following

(1) unexplained, recurrent or sustained fever, with temperature > 38°C

(2) drenching night sweats

(3) weight loss > 10% over the 6 months prior to diagnosis

"Bulky" disease - at least 1 of the following:

(1) 1 or more tumor masses >= 7 cm

(2) a mediastinal mass visible on a standing PA chest X-ray

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 5

• A low score is associated with a good prognosis while a high score is associated with a poor prognosis.
