Description

The DEMI (depth, extension, morbidity, inhalation) score of Demirdjian et al uses 7 factors to assess prognosis in burned children.

Parameters:

(1) total percent body surface area burned

(2) percent body surface area with partial thickness (second degree) burns

(3) percent body surface area with full thickness (third degree) burns

(4) dorsal-gluteal burn

(5) complications due to inadequate transfer (complications on admission related to inadequate transfer conditions, including hypothermia, hypovolemic shock, neurogenic shock, possible inhalation injury without oxygen support, etc.)

(6) underlying illness that could affect prognosis

(7) inhalation syndrome (history of fire in an enclosed space, facial burns, respiratory distress, hypoxemia)

= SUM(points for all 7 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 10

• The higher the score, the more serious the injury.
