The Belgian Outcome in Burn Injury Study Group developed a score for grading the severity of a burn injury. This can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Ghent University and other institutions in Belgium.
Patient selection: burn injury
Outcome: mortality
Parameters:
(1) age in years
(2) percent of body surface area burned
(3) inhalation injury

Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 10
• The higher the score the greater the risk for mortality.

Performance:
• The area under the ROC curve was 0.94.
• Some investigators find an increased risk of mortality in the very young.
• Other risk factors (trauma, comorbid conditions, etc) are not included in the score.
Purpose: To estimate the risk of mortality for a burn patient using the severity of burn injury scoring system of the Belgium Outcome in Burn Injury Study Group.
Specialty: Emergency Medicine, Critical Care
Objective: severity, prognosis, stage
