Teichholz et al developed a formula for estimated left ventricular volume based on echocardiographic measurements of the left ventricle.
This method can be used to determine the end-systolic or end-diastolic left ventricular volume/
Parameters:
(1) short axis inner diameter of the left ventricle in cm at end-systole
(2) short axis inner diameter of the left ventricle in cm at end-diastole
volume of the left ventricle in mL =
= 7 * ((diameter)^3) / ((diameter) + 2.4)
Limitations:
• The equation may be inaccurate in patients with coronary artery disease and left ventricular asynergy.
