The staging system of Robson et al for renal cell carcinoma can be used to assess a patient's prognosis.

confined within the renal capsule	I
extending through the renal capsule but confined by Gerota's fascia	II
renal vein or inferior vena caval involvement	IIIA
regional lymph node involvement	IIIB
both vascular and nodal involvement	IIIC
extension into adjacent organs by direct invasion (other than ipsilateral adrenal gland)	IVA
distant metastasis	IVB

• Gerota's fascia delimits the perinephric fat.
