Description

Balu et al reported the NEOS score for predicting the functional status of a patient with anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis. This can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from the University of Pennsylvania, University of Barcelona and Erasmus University Medical Center.

Patient selection: anti-NMDA (Anti-N-Methyl-D-Aspartate) receptor encephalitis

Outcome: modified Ranking scale >= 3 at 1 year (poor)

Parameters:

(1) ICU admission

(2) clinical improvement after 4 weeks of treatment

(3) treatment within 4 weeks of symptom onset

(4) brain MRI

(5) CSF WBC count per microliter

Interpretation:

minimum score: 0

maximum score: 5

The higher the score the greater the risk for poor functional status at 1 year.
