Description

A pregnant infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) may transmit the virus to her infant. A number of risk factors may affect whether the infant becomes infected or not.

Patient selection: HCV RNA-positive (in the series of Mast et al, no transmission occurred in mothers who were HCV RNA-negative)

Maternal risk factors:

(1) HIV-positive

Perinatal risk factors:

(1) rupture of the membranes >= 6 hours prior to delivery

(2) using an internal sensor to monitor the fetus

Ways to reduce perinatal spread:

(1) Perform a cesarean section before or shortly after rupture of the membranes.

(2) Use only external fetal monitoring.

Other theoretical risk factors:

(1) maternal trauma during pregnancy
