Description

de Vos et al developed the HATCH score to evaluate a patient's risk for progression form paroxysmal to persistent atrial fibrillation (AF). These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from closer monitoring and more aggressive management. The authors are from Maastricht University in The Netherlands.

Patient selection: presence of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation

Parameters:

(1) hypertension (H)

(2) age (A)

(3) TIA or stroke (T)

(4) chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD (C)

(5) history of heart failure (H)

total score =

= SUM(points for all 5 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 7

• The higher the score the greater the risk of changing from paroxymal to persistent atrial fibrillation.

Performance:

• The odds ratios for 3 items is around 1.5.

• The ROC curve plot in Figure 2 indicates fair performance.
