Grades for Functional Disability in Dermatomyositis or Polymyositis

Purpose: To determine the level of disability associated with dermatomyositis or polymyositis using the scheme of Henricksson and Sandestedt.

Description

Henricksson and Sandestedt developed a grading scale for functional disability in patients with polymyositis. It can be used to monitor a patient's response to therapy over time.


 

Parameters:

(1) level of disability

(2) functional level

full function of upper limbs; may have difficulty running

slight

able to walk and use stairs; no distal limb impairment

moderate

difficulty in walking or using stairs; both proximal and distal limb impairment

severe

requires wheelchair or bedridden

Interpretation:

• An improvement in muscle impairment involves a gain in 1 grade.
