Henricksson and Sandestedt developed a grading scale for functional disability in patients with polymyositis. It can be used to monitor a patient's response to therapy over time.
Parameters:
(1) level of disability
(2) functional level
Disability |
Functional Level |
Grade |
none |
normal |
0 |
none or insignificant |
full function of upper limbs; may have difficulty running |
1 |
slight |
able to walk and use stairs; no distal limb impairment |
2 |
moderate |
difficulty in walking or using stairs; both proximal and distal limb impairment |
3 |
severe |
requires wheelchair or bedridden |
4 |
Interpretation:
• An improvement in muscle impairment involves a gain in 1 grade.
Purpose: To determine the level of disability associated with dermatomyositis or polymyositis using the scheme of Henricksson and Sandestedt.
Specialty: Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation, Immunology/Rheumatology
Objective: severity, prognosis, stage, disability and performance
