Description

Daltroy et al extended the Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ) for use in patients with a spondyloarthropathy. The Health Assessment Questionnaire for Spondyloarthropathy (HAQ-S) includes additional questions for functional impairments in these patients. The authors are from Harvard School of Public Health and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.


Components:

(1) original questions of the HAQ

(2) 3 questions for carrying and sitting (SPAR1)

(2) 2 questions for driving (SPAR 2)

 

Questions in SPAR 1 group:

(1) ability to carry heavy packages (grocery bags, other)

(2) ability to sit for long periods of time

(3) ability to sit and work at a flat topped table or desk

 

Questions in SPAR 2 group:

(1) ability to look in the rear view mirror while driving

(2) ability to turn the head around and drive in reverse

 

where:

• If a person does not drive, there are 2 options - not grade or change wording (able to turn head and look up, able to twist around)

The subscales were handled "using the same format" as the HAQ and added to the 8 subscales of the HAQ (page 946). This implies a maximum HAQ-S of 30 with a disability index ranging from 0 to 3.

 

In addition, the authors used 2 VAS scales that were 100 mm in length for pain and stiffness.
