Description

Kanesvaran et al developed a clinical scoring system for predicting overall survival for elderly Asian cancer patients. These can help to identify patients who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Singapore General Hospital.

Patient: Asian patient 70 to 94 years of age with cancer

Parameters:

(1) age in years

(2) serum albumin

(3) ECOG performance status

(4) geriatric depression scale

(5) cancer stage

(6) DETERMINE nutrition index (Posner et al, see 12.02.04)

points for age =

= (1.167 * (age in years)) - 81.69

where:

• An ECOG score of 4 usually indicates a cancer patient with limited life expectancy.

= SUM(points for all 6 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 123

• The higher the score the worse the overall survival.
