Description

Browne and Holland reported a number of infections associated with the presence of certain anticytokine autoantibodies.

anti-GM-CSF (granulocyte monocyte colony stimulating factor)

Nocardia, Aspergillus, Histoplasma, Cryptococcus, Proteus

anti-interferon gamma

nontuberculous myobacteria

anti-interferon alpha

viral infection

anti-IL6 (interleukin 6)

Staphylococcus aureus

anti-IL17

mucocutaneous candidiasis

anti-IL22

mucocutaneous candidiasis

anti-TNF (tumor necrosis factor)

Gram negative infection

 

The possibility of anticytokine autoantibodies should be considered in a person with an infection if:

(1) unusual pathogen or unusual severity or recurrent (suspicion for an immunodeficiency)

(2) absence of other explanation
