Description

Albertsen et al studied survival for men with prostate cancer that was clinically localized and which was treated conservatively. Conservative treatment involves either no therapy, immediate hormonal therapy, or delayed hormonal therapy. This can give a baseline against which more aggressive therapy can be compared.

In general, over a 15 year period following initial diagnosis:

(1) Patients with a Gleason score of 2 to 4 face a minimal risk of death from prostate cancer.

(2) Patients with a Gleason score of 5 or 6 face a modest risk of death from prostate cancer that increases slowly.

(3) Patients with a Gleason score of 7 to 10 face a high risk of death from prostate cancer.
