Description

Atsumi et al identified risk factors for esophageal stenosis following radiotherapy for esophageal cancer. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from modified or alternative therapy to reduce the risk of stenosis. The authors are from Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan.

Patient selection: esophageal cancer patient undergoing radiation therapy

Risk factors for esophageal stenosis:

(1) T stage T3 or T4

(2) circumferential wall involvement

(3) thickening of the esophageal wall in the region of the tumor (>= 10 mm, Table 3, Atsumi et al 2010)

The frequency and degree of stenosis increased with the number of risk factors present.
