Description

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) may be contraindicated in certain situations. Either an alternative imaging method should be used, or the problem addressed.


 

Contraindications to MRI:

(1) pacemaker

(2) surgical and aneurysmal metal clips, including metal wires

(3) bullets or shrapnel

(4) iron foreign bodies (including iron filings)

(5) claustraphobia

(6) patient who requires immediate access for management

(7) patient requiring emergency care (image acquisition may be slow)

 

May be allowed, depending on material:

(1) orthopedic joint implants

(2) prosthetic heart valves

 

Need to check on:

(1) dental prosthesis like braces

(2) orthopedic screws and plates
