Description

Madsen and Iversen developed a symptom severity score sheet that can be used to evaluate patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy.

Parameters:

(1) stream

(2) voiding

(3) hesitancy

(4) intermittency

(5) bladder emptying

(6) incontinence

(7) urge

(8) nocturia

(9) diuria (frequency of urination during the day)

where:

• The Crede maneuver involves application of suprapubic pressure as an aid to emptying the bladder.

clinical score =

= SUM(points for all 9 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 27

• The higher the score, the more severe the symptoms from the BPH.

Limitations:

• According to the US Department of Health and Human Services Clinical Practice Guidelines for BPH (1994, page 29), the score is not considered ideal since the point assignments were based on expert opinion rather than on randomized studies of patients.
