The American Urological Association symptom index for benign prostatic hyperplasia (also referred to as the International Prostate Symptom Score) is a series of questions used to assess the severity of symptoms caused by the prostatic enlargement.
The instrument consists of 7 items dealing with symptoms of BPH over the past month.
The responses are scored from 0 (good) to 5 (poor).

Interpretation:
• minimum score 0
• maximum score 35

Limitations:
• The symptoms experienced in benign prostatic hypertrophy are nonspecific and can be seen in other conditions.
