Presenteeism refers to a symptomatic person who comes in and remains at work.


Conditions affecting the person may include:

(1) physical illness

(2) mental illness such as depression

(3) family or other concerns

 

Reasons for showing up:

(1) work ethic

(2) no sick time available

(3) fear for job

(4) real or imagined peer pressure

(5) necessity

(6) get away from home

 

Adverse effects:

(1) spread of infection (contagion)

(2) effect on moral

(3) underperformance with decreased productivity

(4) increased risk of accidents or errors

 

Factors determining impact:

(1) duration of condition (short vs prolonged)

(2) severity of condition

(3) position of the person

(4) ability to cope with work demands

(5) ability of others to take up the slack
