Description

Karabayir et al identified factors associated with the development of Meconium Aspiration Syndrome (MAS). A neonate judged to be at risk may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Istanbul Medipol University and Kanuni Sultan Suleyman Education and Research Hospital in Turkey.

Patient: neonate with meconium-stained amniotic fluid

Frequency of MAS development: 5%

Predictors of MAS:

(1) 5-minute Apgar score

(2) low blood pH (7.32 +/- 0.12 vs 7.42 +/- 0.10 in MAS-free neonates)

(3) blood lactate concentration (8.5 +/- 3.4 mmol/L, vs 3.8 +/- 2.0 in MAS-free neonates)

For the implementation the following cutoffs will be used:

(1) 5-minute Apgar score < 7

(2) blood pH < 7.3

(3) blood lactate > 5 mmol/L
