Is the patient unable to tolerate advancement of diet after 36 hours postoperatively?

Is there a documented lack of bowel sounds more than 36 hours postoperatively?

Does the patient have marked abdominal distention?

Has the patient's length of stay been extended by more than 1 day beyond average?

Was the extension due to social and/or placement problems?

Does an abdominal X-ray show ileus?
