Description

A diabetic with renal disease should be referred to a nephrologists if certain conditions are present.


 

Situations when a diabetic patient with renal disease should be referred to a nephrologists:

(1) uncertainty about the etiology of the renal disease

(1a) presence of active urine sediment

(1b) rapid progression

(1c) absence of diabetic retinopathy

(1d) other features atypical for diabetic nephropathy

(2) difficulty in managing the patient (due to comorbid disease, etc)

(3) presence of advanced kidney disease (preferably before Stage V)
