Description

Mechanic's hands is a skin condition seen in a number of autoimmune disorders, including the anti-synthetase syndrome.


 

Clinical findings:

(1) thick, hyperkeratotic and cracked skin on the lateral and ventral surfaces of the fingers

(2) hyperkeratotic plaques on the palms

 

Some patients also have skin lesions on the feet.

 

Autoimmune diseases associated with mechanic's hands:

(1) anti-synthetase syndrome, typically with anti-Jo1

(2) dermatomyositis

(3) mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD)

(4) systemic lupus erythematosus

 

Differential diagnosis:

(1) contact allergy

(2) chemical injury

(3) trauma

(4) eczema
