The MACIS (metastasis, age, completeness of resection, invasion, size) prognostic score can be used to predict prognosis in patients with papillary carcinoma of the thyroid.
Parameters found to independent predictive variables in papillary carcinomas of the thyroid:
(1) age
(2) tumor size
(3) local invasion (extrathyroidal)
(4) distant metastases
These were used to develop a prognostic score, with the addition of a fifth parameter for completeness of surgical resection.

= (points for metastasis) + (points for age) + (points for completeness of resection) + (points for invasion) + (points for size)
Interpretation:
• minimum score 3.14 [3.1 + (0.3 * 0.1)]
• maximum score > 13
• The higher the score, the worse the prognosis.
