The EORTC Thyroid Cancer Group developed a prognostic index for patients with thyroid carcinoma. It uses survival from all causes of death as the endpoint.
Parameters at time of initial diagnosis:
(1) age
(2) gender
(3) histologic type
(4) T category from 1968 TNM classification
(5) distant metastases

where:
• T3 code for 1968 TNM classification = extension beyond the thyroid glands with fixation or infiltration of adjacent structures; this corresponds to the current T4. T0 = nonpalpable; T1 = mobile, limited to thyroid, with no deformity; T2 = single or multiple mobile tumors deforming the gland
EORTC prognostic index =
= SUM(points for all 5 parameters)
Interpretation:
• minimum score: depends on age of patient (could be < 20)
• maximum score: depends on age of patient (could be > 150)

Limitations:
• The index was described in 1979. The expected survival has probably improved since then.
