Equation of Quiterio et al Using Height and Weight to Estimate Appendicular Lean Soft Tissue (ALST) in Adolescents

Purpose: To estimate the appendicular lean soft tissue of an adolescent using the height and weight equation of Quiterio et al.

Description

Quiterio et al developed an equation to estimate the appendicular lean soft tissue (ALST) mass in adolescent athletes. This can be used as an estimate of total body skeletal muscle. The authors are from the University of Lisbon and University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.


Parameters:

(1) weight in kilograms

(2) height in meters

(3) gender (male 1, female 0)

(4) age in years

 

estimated ALST in kg =

= (0.192 * (age in years)) + (3.294 * (points for gender)) + (14.23 * (height)) + (0.199 * (weight)) - 20.338

 

Performance:

• R-square was 0.91 and SEE was 2.01.
