Chuang et al developed criteria for the diagnosis of polymyalgia rheumatica in 1982.
Criteria for diagnosis - all of the following:
(1) age of the patient >= 50 years
(2) erythrocyte sedimentation rate > 40 mm/h
(3) bilateral aching and stiffness for >= 1 month involving >= 2 of the 3 target body regions (see below)
(4) exclusion of all other diagnoses except temporal (giant cell) arteritis
Target body regions:
(1) neck or torso
(2) shoulder or proximal regions of the arms
(3) hips or proximal aspects of the thighs
