Heuft-Dorenbosch et al developed the Maastrich Ankylosing Spondyulitis Enthesitis Index (MASES) as a short version of the Mander Enthesis Index. This is easier to use and less time consuming to complete. The is The authors are from University Hospital Maastricht in The Netherlands.

(9) iliac crest, left

(10) iliac crest, right

(11) fifth lumbar spinous process

(12) proximal insertion of Achilles tendon, left

(13) proximal insertion of Achilles tendon, right

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score (as reported): 13

• The higher the score the greater the enthesis.

• A score of one or greater was considered significant.

 

An alternative approach is to grade the intensity of pain and tenderness as in the original Mander enthesis index, in which case the maximum score is 39.
