Description

Criteria for alcoholic chronic pancreatitis were proposed at a workshop in Zurich. These were followed in the M-ANNHEIM system for chronic pancreatitis.


Patient selection: history of excessive alcohol intake (> 80 g/day)

 

Criteria for definite alcoholic chronic pancreatitis - one or more of the following:

(1) calcification of the pancreas

(2) moderate to marked ductal lesions according to the Cambridge criteria

(3) marked exocrine insufficiency (steatorrhea normalized or significantly reduced by pancreatic enzyme supplements)

(4) typical histology on an adequate surgical specimen

 

Criteria for probable alcoholic chronic pancreatitis - one or more of the following:

(1) mild ductal alterations by the Cambridge criteria

(2) recurrent or persistent pseudocysts

(3) abnormal secretin test (or other test of exocrine function)

(4) endocrine insufficiency (diabetes)
