A rare but serious complication of the yellow fever vaccine is Yellow Fever Vaccine-Associated Viscerotropic Disease (YEL-AVD).
Synonym: postvaccinal multiple organ failure (MOF)
Onset: 2-5 days after the vaccination
Clinical features:
(1) fever
(2) respiratory failure
(3) neurotropic disease (encephalitis)
(4) renal failure
(5) jaundice
Laboratory features:
(1) elevated liver function tests
(2) pancytopenia
The disease may range from moderate to severe and it can be fatal.
