Xanthomatosis coli is a rare disorder of the colonic mucosa.
Features:
(1) diffuse yellow papules 1-4 mm in the colon, with sparing of the rectum
(2) biopsy of the lesion shows numerous foamy macrophages/histiocytes in the lamina propria that stain positive for CD-68
Rarely a patient may have disseminated xanthomatosis.
Differential diagnosis:
(1) xanthomatous polyp (hyperplastic polyp with foamy macrophages in the lamina propria)
(2) solitary colonic xanthoma
