Description

The Endocrine Society and American Thyroid Association have listed conditions that should help to identify a woman who should have be targeted for testing during pregnancy and the postpartum period.


 

A woman who is pregnant or in the postpartum period should be targeted for thyroid testing if she:

(1) is >= 30 years old

(2) has a family history of hypothyroidism or autoimmune thyroid disease

(3) has a goiter

(4) has anti-thyroid autoantibodies

(5) has signs and symptoms suggestive of hypothyroidism

(6) has Type 1 diabetes mellitus or other autoimmune disorder

(7) is infertile

(8) has a history of miscarriage and/or preterm delivery

(9) has a history of head and neck irradiation

(10) has a history of prior thyroid surgery

(11) is receiving levothyroxine replacement

(12) is from a region endemic for iodine deficiency

(13) is being treated with amiodarone

(14) is being treated with lithium

(15) has been exposed to an iodinated radiological contrast agent in the past 6 weeks

(16) is morbidly obese (BMI >= 40 kg per square meter)
