The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends high level decontamination following certain contacts with patients who may have a Tranmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy (TSE).
Situations for which high level decontamination is recommended:
(1) confirmed or suspected cases of TSE
(2) confirmed or suspected cases of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (vCJD)
(3) patient with history of exposure to human-derived pituitary hormone, dura mater and/or cornea AND high tissue infectivity
(4) member of a family with a hereditary form of TSE AND high tissue infectivity
High tissue infectivity is associated with contact with:
(1) brain
(2) spinal cord
(3) eye
All other situations can undergo routine cleaning and disinfection.
