The World Health Organization (WHO) has listed different types of female genital mutilation. This involves partial or complete removal of external female genitalia or injury to female genitalia done for cultural or religious reasons.

Type
excision of prepuce; excision of part or all of the clitoris
I
excision of prepuce and clitoris (Type I) AND partial or total excision of the labia minora
II
excision of part or all of the external genitalia (Type II) AND stitching of the two cut sides together to varying degrees (infibulation)
III
thermal burns (cautery) of the external genitaia
IV
chemical burns (corrosive substances or herbs) of the vagina
IV
pricking, piercing, scraping and/or incising of the external genitalia
IV
stretching of the clitoris and/or labia
IV
where:
• Male circumcision would be comparable to Type I FGM.
