The World Health Organization (WHO) revised its classification of response to antimalarials in 2005.
Parameters:
(1) danger signs or severe malaria
(2) parasitemia
(3) axillary temperature
Early treatment failure - any of the following:
(1) (danger signs or severe malaria) AND (parasitemia) AND (day 1, 2 or 3 of therapy)
(2) parasitemia on day 2 of therapy > parasitemia on day 0
(3) (parasitemia present on day 3) AND (axillary temperature >= 37.5°C)
(4) parasitemia on day 3 >= (0.25 * (parasitemia on day 0)
Late clinical failure - any of the following:
(1) (danger signs or severe malaria) AND (parasitemia) AND (any day between day 4 and 28) AND (not early treatment failure)
(2) (parasitemia) AND (axillary temperature >= 37.5°C) AND (any day between 4 and 28) AND (not early treatment failure)
where:
• Other endpoints (42 or 63 days) can be used instead of 28.
Late parasitological failure:
(1) (parasitemia) AND (on day 4 to 28) AND (axillary temperature < 37.5°C) AND (not early treatment failure or late treatment failure)
Adequate clinical and parasitological response:
(1) (absence of parasitemia) AND (day 28) AND (not early treatment failure, late treatment failure or late parasitological failure)
