White hat bias is a form of bias introduced by researchers into the reporting of their research.


Source of term: Good guys wear white hats.

 

Features of white hat bias:

(1) distortion of evidence

(2) done for self-perceived righteous ends

(3) may be motivated by zeal or righteous indignation

 

There may be a tendency to demonize or sanctify certain actions or behaviors, which limits objectivity and distorts perceptions.

 

The behavior may incorporate selective reporting, misrepresentations or inappropriate statements.
