The ratio of the white blood cell count to mean platelet volume can provide prognostic information in some conditions with an acute phase reaction.
Parameters:
(1) white blood cell (WBC) count in 10^9/L
(2) mean platelet volume (MPV) in femtoliters (normal 9-12 fL)
ratio =
= (WBC count) / (MPV)
Interpretation:
• An increased ratio on admission for ST-segment AMI is associated with a worse outcome.
• An increased ratio is associated with critical limb ischemia in a patient with peripheral arterial disease.
