Description

Sometimes it is necessary to bring a sick child back to the clinic or hospital after having been initially released. This should be done when one or more clinical findings are present that indicate potentially serious illness. The following list was developed by the WHO for developing countries.

The child should be brought back for re-evaluation if the child

(1) is unable to drink or breastfeed.

(2) appears to have become sicker (clinically worse).

(3) recurrent signs of illness return after having been treated in the hospital

(4) develops a fever

(5) with cough or cold has difficulty breathing or starts to breathe rapidly

(6) with diarrhea shows blood in the stool or drinks poorly

where:

• A temperature threshold for fever probably needs to be specified.
