Description

The meibomian glands secrete a lipid-rich fluid that reduced water evaporation from the surface of the eye. Meibomian gland dysfunction decreases this fluid and can contribute to dry eye.

When to consider evaluating a patient for obstructive meibomian gland dysfunction:

(1) dry eye with unstable tear film

(2) unexplained damage to the ocular surface epithelium

(3) chronic blepharitis

(4) contact lens intolerance

(5) giant papillary conjunctivitis
