Description

Ferguson et al developed a risk score for pulmonary complications following esophagectomy performed for cancer. The score was based on preoperative findings which allows for making adjustments to management decisions. The authors are from the University of Chicago.

NOTE: Ferguson et al did a score in 2002 for pulmonary complications in patients undergoing esophagectomy for cancer

Patient selection: esophagectomy

Outcome: pulmonary complications (reintubation, pneumonia)

Parameters:

(1) age in years, adjusted for decade over 50 years of age

(2) FEV1 as percent of predicted

(3) ECOG performance status

(4) DLco as percent of predicted

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 16

• The higher the score the greater the risk for pulmonary complications.
