Description

A weight-lifter may experience a blackout while lifting. Working with a spotter can help to avoid injury and to call for help if needed.


 

Features of weight-lifter's blackout:

The weight-lifter experiences a sudden loss of consciousness (blackout).

(2) This may be preceded by straining, a Valsalva maneurver and/or hyperventilation.

(3) The risk may be increased by concurrent illness and/or medications.

(4) Exclusion of other explanations (seizure, stroke, etc)

 

The mechanism is a sudden drop in cerebral perfusion.
